The Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE) UK has welcomed the final adoption of the revised EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive as a strong foundation on which member states can build towards a circular economy.
ACE UK, which represents leading beverage carton manufacturers Tetra Pak, Elopak, and SIG Combibloc supports the ambitious recycling targets in the updated legislation and the mandate to separate collection of packaging.
Commenting Richard Hands, Chief Executive of ACE UK said: “This is an important piece of legislation that the UK Government has previously signalled it is willing to adopt. We hope that in its forthcoming proposals the government will at least consider the ambitious targets set out in this legislation and potentially go further.”
“We also believe the legislation’s focus on separate collection of packaging will help improve the quality of waste streams and incentivise investment in recycling solutions. This is a positive move which will help develop the in-country infrastructure vital for a sustainable circular economy.”
ACE UK also welcomes the recognition in the revised legislation of the benefits of bio-based renewable materials, such as wood fibre. Bio materials are not only recyclable but offer sustainable solutions for transitioning to a low-carbon society. ACE UK members believe renewable materials will play a vital role in helping Europe to reduce carbon and be less dependent on valuable non-renewable resources.
