Kerbside collection of cartons reaches 85.5% of UK councils
We are really pleased to share that liquid cartons are now widely collected in the UK. As of 6th April 2026, 85.5% of UK local authorities accept cartons as part of their kerbside recycling collection service.
The milestone marks a significant step in a journey that began back in 2007 with the members of ACE UK funding the first bring banks for cartons to demonstrate consumer demand and build the case for kerbside collection.
The increase also coincides with the introduction of Simpler Recycling, which aims to standardise collection across England and follows the recent publication of the Welsh Government Collections Blueprint. ACE UK has long advocated for cartons to be added as a core material for collection. Not only does this make it easier and more convenient for citizens, it also increases the volume of material available for reprocessing.
Reaching 85.5% kerbside coverage is a significant achievement, and a strong footing to build on as the remaining authorities move toward citizen-friendly collection systems.
